Using hyperbaric oxygen for anti-aging and skin renewal is the latest buzz among celebrities, and it’s easy to understand why.

“Anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant.”

– Dr. Ellen Marmur, dermatologist

Increasing circulation to your skin will supply your cells with much-needed oxygen to improve sagging, wrinkles, and even age spots. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is popular among celebrities hoping to enhance both health and the quality of their skin. A daily, living probiotic can also support a skin renewal treatment — the potassium and sulfur in CocoBiotic help to naturally increase circulation in the skin.

Have you ever peeked in the mirror after exercising? You may notice that your skin glows. After a tough workout, our skin becomes dewy with sweat, and usually, the cheeks or the entire face is flushed pink. This is a good sign. It is evident that the outermost reaches of our cells have been bathed in oxygen-rich blood.

Damage to skin cells, age spots, wrinkles, sagging skin from weak collagen structure — all of this can improve when we increase circulation to the most peripheral areas of the body, which is your skin! We do everything in our power to hide these signs of age, but interestingly enough, research indicates that wrinkles could serve a deeper purpose, providing a better picture of our internal health. A study presented at The Endocrine Society’s 93rd Annual Meeting in 2011 showed that the deeper a woman’s skin wrinkles in the first years of menopause are, the lower her bone density will be — a precursor to osteoporosis.1

While our inner health deserves the most attention when it comes to improving the health and appearance of the skin, there are several proven natural treatments that can manage and potentially reverse skin damage that has already occurred. Oxygen, the third most abundant element in the universe, may prove to be one of the most effective treatments for the telltale signs of age that crop up unannounced. In a 2010 Japanese study, mice who were placed in an oxygen chamber after being exposed to UVB rays, known to prematurely age the skin, developed fewer wrinkles and showed fewer signs of tissue damage overall.2

Hyperbaric Oxygen for Anti-Aging: How to Revive Tired Skin

Dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, says, “We tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant.”

This is one of the reasons why facial acupuncture or even frequent facial massage can help smooth away wrinkles.2

It is also why many top actors, actresses, and models, whose skin is constantly in the limelight, are using cutting-edge techniques to improve both skin quality and overall health, including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). With so many abrasive creams, ointments, pills, and procedures that are used to create a glowing complexion, isn’t it refreshing to come across something as safe and beneficial as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

While HBOT can be used to treat a wide array of serious health conditions, ranging from traumatic brain injury to gut function, it also just makes you feel good:

  • Many NFL athletes own their own chambers because it helps them heal up quickly after an injury.
  • HBOT has been used successfully by war veterans and trauma survivors to relieve post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).3
  • Some stroke victims have used HBOT to encourage full recovery; the treatment has been proven to boost brain repair years after stroke or traumatic brain injury.4
  • Sick pets have benefited from HBOT under a veterinarian’s care, with treatment for infection, rattlesnake bites, and injuries after being hit by a car.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy takes place in a high-pressure, oxygen-rich chamber. The FDA has cleared HBOT for use in certain cases, though the safety and efficacy of the treatment have not been proven for all conditions. HBOT is a service that some insurance companies may cover if the diagnosis falls under FDA clearance. For more serious illnesses and medical conditions, it is always important to use HBOT under the care of your doctor. (Most states require a doctor’s prescription.)

The latest research on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been encouraging for sufferers of those “mysterious” maladies with symptoms that are hard to treat. In 2015, Rice University researchers found that women with fibromyalgia saw benefits after receiving the treatment — providing possible treatment options for other physical and mental conditions related to cognitive impairment, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and sleep disturbance.5

High-dose HBOT has also been used to extend the survival window after cardiac arrest, even enhancing the effectiveness of the natural compound artemisinin used as an alternative cancer treatment.6,7

What Makes Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy So Effective?

HBOT covers a wide range of disorders. While there is no magic bullet in health, there are certain essential mechanisms in the body that must work correctly in order to be healthy. One such mechanism is blood flow or perfusion. Put simply, each and every cell in the body needs oxygen and nutrients that it can only receive from blood.

The fact that we breathe air does not promise that each cell is receiving what it needs to thrive. In fact, most of us, for one reason or another, are not getting the amount of perfusion that we need.

Inflammatory conditions, whether the result of stress or injury, all benefit from a therapeutic dose of oxygen. Not only does oxygen feed the cells, but healthy blood flow also carries away waste products like cellular debris and dangerous free radical toxins. In 2013, University of Edinburgh researchers confirmed, when studying how oxygen in the body can affect the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, that oxygen levels play a major role in determining the severity of the body’s inflammatory response.8 When you consider that chronic inflammation can disrupt a healthy blood system, potentially increasing cancer risk as a University of California San Francisco research team discovered in 2016, the use of oxygen therapy to calm inflammation makes perfect sense.9

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy bathes the cells in the body with oxygen.

Because a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber is pressurized, oxygen easily enters every tissue of the body. This is why HBOT dramatically diminishes the appearance of wrinkles in the skin.

HBOT directly encourages overall skin health:

  • The surface of the skin and the tissue that structurally supports the skin rely on a constant supply of nutrients, especially oxygen.
  • When cells do not receive enough oxygen, they slowly begin to malfunction and die.

This means that HBOT helps the skin heal after trauma, injury, or surgery. A therapeutic dose of oxygen can also improve skin infections, and it can be especially useful in regulating the appearance of chronic acne. Even fungal skin infections and dandruff, also called scalp dermatitis, will noticeably benefit from increased circulation and healthy blood flow.

The Anti-Aging Therapy You Can Try at Home

If HBOT therapies seem out of reach for you, another powerful therapy is the NanoVi™. The NanoVi™ works slightly differently by helping your body create its own oxygen. This is a therapy I personally use myself at home. I’ve had one for several years now and recently upgraded to a newer unit. I became convinced I had to spend the money once I read the research showing how effective the NanoVi™ is against inflammation, which underlies every disease we have today, even aging. I watched people literally grow younger or heal very quickly after surgery when using their NanoVi™.

But what really sold me was the effect it has on sleep, which is why I finally purchased one for myself and my family. It’s a stress-buster and is wonderfully relaxing when used any time of the day, but when used at bedtime, it switches off the brain signals that keep us awake. For me, it stops the mind-chattering that so many of us have once we crawl between those covers, especially as women. I recently purchased a new NanoVi™ because it has a setting that allows it to run through the night. Now I can breathe oxygen in while I sleep.

Deep, restful sleep is essential for rejuvenation and healing — and also for beautiful skin. Great for use in a spa or skin care salon, the NanoVi™ initiates skin strengthening at the cellular level, improving the body’s natural antioxidant defense to repair damage from outside sources that is unavoidable. While the NanoVi™ can be complementary to HBOT, it’s important to note that cells can’t metabolize more oxygen without generating more free radicals. So, hyperbaric chambers should be used with caution and preferably under medical guidance. When hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used for anti-aging or rejuvenation, it’s best paired with the NanoVi™ device, a combination that has been shown to improve patient outcomes at HBOT centers. And though the NanoVi™ can safely initiate cellular repair at home, unregulated soft chambers for home use (including HBOT) are not recommended since the pressure may not be high enough to kill all harmful pathogens.

If you are a practitioner, you may want to offer NanoVi™ treatments in your office. In fact, a number of NanoVis™ have been purchased by functional medicine MDs, DOs, and naturopaths. NanoVi™ units can also be found in some gyms, workout studios, and physical therapists’ offices. When athletes used the NanoVi Pro™ device for 15 minutes before exhaustive exercise, University of Vienna researchers detected up to 17 percent lower blood lactate levels in the treatment group versus the placebo group.10

In a nutshell: Increased blood flow to the skin makes us more beautiful, and the science shows this much is true. Studies have long supported HBOT’s use in medicine, but a 2014 review published in Medical Gas Research found great potential for using oxygen therapy to refresh aging skin, though more research may be needed on treatment specifications and dose. “The use of high oxygen concentration to reduce the visibility of wrinkles have shown to be promising and effective to a certain degree since this treatment is currently being used and is becoming more widespread in spas and dermatology clinics worldwide,” the researchers wrote.11

What To Remember Most About This Article:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy will not only improve the quality of your skin to treat wrinkles and sagging, but it may be used to alleviate serious health conditions, including injuries, PTSD, and stroke.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy provides advanced healing by bathing the body in oxygen to feed cells and stimulate blood flow. This increase in circulation will flush out cellular waste and cleanse harmful free radicals from the system. HBOT is most frequently used to promote healing after injury, trauma, or surgery. And while most research focuses on this treatment’s ability to improve and manage illness and poor health, the latest studies point to HBOT’s restorative effect on the skin. Using a high concentration of oxygen has been proven to be promising and effective to reduce the visibility of wrinkles.
