What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy entails breathing oxygen in a pressurized tube. By increasing the pressure that surrounds you, your body absorbs a significantly higher level of oxygen, which as a result, activates your body’s healing and recovery processes. The popularity of HBOT is widespread and is increasingly being relied upon to treat an ever-growing range of medical conditions, such as wounds that won’t heal, brain injuries, autism, autoimmune issues, infectious diseases – even anti-aging. A therapy session typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours, and the number of sessions you may need depends on your condition. However, similar to your commitment to the gym for accelerated health,  results achieved from Hyperbaric Therapy are also accumulative, and the longer that you utilize your “ hyperbaric workout”, the stronger your body becomes.

The Importance of oxygen concentrators for your hyperbaric sessions

The magic of HBOT is the pressure. It’s the pressure that pushes the oxygen that you breath deep into your body, activating all the cells and generating its repairs. Hyperbaric Therapy without a concentrator is, in fact, effective due to the fact that pressure pushes any oxygen that you are breathing directly to the parts of your body that are in need of help. However, by adding an oxygen concentrator to your deep dive sessions, you are also increasing the level of oxygen that gets pressed into your bloodstream. Without a concentrator, you breathe 21 percent oxygen that’s derived from the air around you. Add in a concentrator and the level of pure oxygen you benefit from revs up to 95 percent. To translate, you receive four times more oxygen for every session that you’re breathing this purified O2 versus diving without a concentrator. One hour with a concentrator is equivalent to four hours inside your chamber without the added oxygen.  The concentrators goes to work extracting oxygen from the air, removing extraneous gases like nitrogen from the mix, then it concentrates it to a highly pure level to deliver directly into your body through a mask or nasal canula. Increasing oxygen enhances the overall effectiveness of your hyperbaric session.

Which concentrator works effectively with my chamber?

Although there is a vast supply of oxygen concentrators on the market, the only concentrators that are powerful enough to bypass the chamber’s pressure are the 10 liter per minute (LPM) variety. Sifting this collection down even further, the concentrator must offer a 20 psi (pounds per square inch) outflow to push the oxygen into the pressurized environment to provide you with a breathable level of oxygen. With its 20 psi backflow, your concentrator will not have to strain to push pure air into the chamber, and then into your body.Although there are a few 10 lpm models out there, some only offer an output pressure of 7-10 psi. Beware, as this compressor backpressure won’t have the strength to push through the pressure. The capacity of the concentrator determines how much oxygen it can deliver per minute, affecting its effectiveness. There may be the temptation of purchasing a 5 lpm concentrator to save a little cash. However, the 5 lpm will not be potent enough for the pressure. What’s more the pressure can potentially burn out the concentrator motor.

Comparing different oxygen concentrator models

We have found two brands that work against the duress of hyperbaric pressure, those being Drive Devilbiss DS1025 and Airsep Newlife Intensity 10. In our opinion, the Devilbiss outperforms Airsep, having a stronger compressor. In our experience, less Devilbiss concentrators have been returned for repair. In addition, Devilbiss offers you a three year warranty. In some instances, the Airsep gives you one year. When there is the occurrence of need for a repair, Devilbiss pays your chamber’s way back to you. Airsep requires you to pay for its return.

Maintenance and care tips for oxygen concentrators

Regular maintenance keeps your oxygen concentrator working efficiently. Clean filters and vents as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace filters regularly to ensure optimal performance. Store the concentrator in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and humidity. Check the tubing for any blockages. Do not block airflow around the device. Regularly inspect the concentrator for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Follow these tips to prolong the life of your oxygen concentrator and ensure safe and effective treatment.

Conclusion: Maximizing the benefits of hyperbaric therapy with oxygen concentrators

When considering an oxygen concentrator, whom you purchase your unit from is as valuable at the unit itself. Purchase your concentrator from someone who will help and support you whenever you need it!
